Dear Ben & Jerry, Grammy’s got your back…

File this under: Seriously? This is really an issue??

So this completely open minded *insert eye roll here* ultra humorless conservative, Mom group is boycotting the new Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor “Schweddy Balls” because they think the name is offensive and inappropriate for children. Hello? It’s rum flavored ice cream with rum flavored balls of chocolatey goodness in it…And the part that prevents you from buying it for your kid  is the name?? You’d be ok letting the kiddies get hooked on the taste of rum if Dear Ol’ Ben & Jerry had named it something like ” Happy Little Spherical Shaped Nuggets That Honor An SNL Skit”?  Really???

The flavor is named after the classic Alec Baldwin sketch on “Saturday Night Live,” in which he plays a bakery owner named Pete Schweddy who specializes in popcorn balls, cheese balls, rum balls. The most famous line (and the one most often repeated by drunk frat boys) is: “No one can resist my Schweddy Balls.”

Clearly the name is very tongue-in-cheek, and is it really worth protesting vanilla ice cream with rum and fudge-covered malt balls? Because after all, Trix may be for kids, but rum ice cream is for grownups…. And you do realize how much free publicity you just gave those clever Ben & Jerry’s guys????

I haven’t tried Schweddy Balls, because I can’t find it around here so far. And I’ve looked, because I enjoy the quirky and unusual. Throw in some controversy and I’m all over it! I have a couple more stores to check, I’m a woman on a mission now!

Call me crazy (you won’t be the first) but aren’t there bigger issues out there facing Kids that these Moms could work to change? Oh… I don’t know…like maybe how to handle peer pressure so when people pick on them for being different they’re equipped to handle it without falling apart?

You know who can handle peer pressure and being ridiculed for being different?? Ben & Jerry…

“One Million Moms”, lighten up! I’m willing to bet there are much bigger fish you should be frying….
